The Artist Derek Honour

Derek Honour

Currently a member of Highcliffe Art Fellowship, Milford Art Group and Lymington Art Group

My Father being a very good artist taught me from a very early age. After leaving school, I went to evening art classes for 2 years.

When at the age of 21 years I got married and was not at all encouraged to continue to paint and what with long working hours I gave up, 30 years on, when I met my second wife Linda, she turned the tables after learning from my sister Brenda that the pictures hanging on her wall were painted by me.

She went out and brought me everything an artist could want.

But I just couldn’t switch on.

10 years went by but due to working long shifts I only completed a couple of paintings and that was it.

I retired at 61 and we moved down from London to Hampshire where I finally found myself with a paintbrush in my hand, much to Linda’s relief.

I Joined Highcliffe Art Fellowship in Highcliffe Dorset where once a month they would hold a live demo with a different known artist.

After a period of time, I took over as Chairman for a year as no one would take the position and as it had as many as 150+ members. They were relieved I came in at the last hour.

Although I was brought up painting in oils, when I moved to Hampshire, I tried watercolours. For 18 months I painted with a well-known watercolour artist Marilyn Kendall. She was disappointed when I left as she graciously said I had a natural talent for them, but I felt my heart was in oils and to this day I still paint in my favourite medium, oils.

My Wife Linda encouraged me to open my own class where I could teach and help others.

So, on the 7th Feb 2019, I decided to take the leap and open what is now known as Hordle Art Club in Hordle Hampshire. Where people can come and pick up their skills as I did when I retired. From beginners to semi-professionals, we all help each other, so if you want to learn, come and be a part of a like-minded group. The Club has grown very popular, and we now have 20 members with an ever-growing reserve list. We now have a committee with a Secretary, Treasurer and Exhibition Coordinator, so it’s going great guns.

Take a look at our Events Page for exhibitions dates.
